Grinding it out in Harriman

another mother's day, another Harriman road race. I guess i found the key to doing well. Set very low goals for yourself. With bad legs, I thought I'd be lucky to do three laps in the field. Not only did I do six and only got dropped my last time up the 2.5 mile hump to Lake Tiorati, but I also climbed the Tiorati Brook Road hill faster than ever before. Because of my seemingly bad state I rode ultra-conservative, and didn't go with even what appeared to be weak attacks. I instead paced the field, which lost riders off the back and front all day. I did enough to keep it going, but didn't attack unless someone attacked me. I would have been running for 42nd if I hadn't had a sleepy feeder who missed me as I was running out of water. When the legs were about to seize, I sat up, lost eight minutes to my group in the final 10 miles and rolled in 54th.

Doan was 37th in the 40+
Davic C was 43rd in the IIIs

all for karaoke

Had to skip Jiminy yesterday. I was signed up and ready to go and then realize the wedding I was slated to attend was at 6pm, not 7pm back in NYC. with 7pm, I had an hour cushion, 6, I had nothing. The estimated finish time was 2:09pm. If I got into a friend's car at 2:30 (21 minutes to jawjack and change) and then we did the drive in 2.5 hours, I"d get home at 5, allowing me 7 minutes to shower, 5 to get dressed, 2 to fill a bag with the NY Times, and then head for the train. The drive is about 150 miles or so, but the problem is the final 20 miles or so from Westchester back into the city. Too tight, and since the guy getting married is a racer, it would be hard to fool him. So I did the Gimbels on Saturday where I hurt the field on the climbs, but didn't win the sprints. so made the wedding on time, did Karaoke with the wedding from 10:30 to 2am, caught a fast train home. In bed by 2:45. Up at 9:19, then dressed and out the door by 10 for a 75 mile ride to Garrison, NY. I knew it would be slow with the wind and climbing, but five hours was longer than I expected. And yes, I did not have the fresh feeling. Good training. I hope.

Battenkill-Roubaix

Mixed feelings about the day. First, great course. And the drive was a bit easier than expected. And there was still snow on the ground! Very pro, very springn classic. A number of pros, incudling the Eva DeVinci pro team from Quebec, assorted riders from Symmetrics, Jet Fuel, Jelly Belly, Medfast, Colavita, and a typical cast of regional strongmen.

I had been sick during the week and was on the fence about going. Rode on Friday and did a few hard efforts to see where my legs were at. The signs were very good. So I decided to go. then, had trouble sleeping. Bad sign.

When we got up there, I rolled around, and the legs weren't great. I figured I had enough to do ok. Checked out the final mile before the finish. Downhill, over railroad tracks, then 300 meters of flat. It would be hard to get away in the final miles and small breaks could possibly be chased down. Considered bringing the race profile along. Then forgot.

the opening miles were nervous. People fighting for position. Figured I'd try to be patient, and move up when there were openings and as people got dropped. Saw a guy throw a bike chain on the ground. It had popped off someone's bike and hit the guy. He grabbed it before it went in his wheel. Hit that big opening climb. Fine, then ouch. Came off in the final minute or so. Chased back on. Should have made a point to ride in the top 20 to protect against falling off on subsequent climbs. Didn't.

After 48 miles, the field turned a corner, transitioned from pavement to dirt, hit a hill, and accelerated. Felt ok for about 30-40 seconds and then suddenly my legs started feeling empty. No choice but to back off a little, go hard over the top, and then chase. Only the top was followed by a short descent, and a false flat. I was chasing the rest of the way. My group started as 2 and swelled to 20. The problem with chase groups growing is more people sit on. When we had 6 riders, everyone took a pull, after we were over 8, people were skipping.

With seven miles left, on a dirt climb, we were told the field was less than two minutes ahead. Me and the two Quebec riders kept the pace on, but didn't attack, and no one helped us. over the final hill and onto the downhill, I had two or three people pulling with me. At the end, we were 4:27 behind the lead group, which was 22 at the finish line. I was 10th in the sprint for 48th. Time for the winner, 3:15:37, for my group, 3:20:04. BTW, the race flyer said 75mi, the coure profile 78, my cyclometer 73.5. And something like 5,700 ft of climbing

Interesting to think we had been chasing for 17 miles and lost only two minutes. Losing another 2 on the long downhill to the finish makes sense, as very few were making an effort, while the field was probably attacking one another and setting up leadouts and the like. Though if we had held our position at 2 minutes, we still would have only been sprinting for 42nd.

Pretty good weekend of racing.
Marino Joe McWilliams and myself all raced the 3/4 race in Prospect Park on Sunday. I will admit it was one of the strangest field finishes I have ever taken part in. We went from people taking pulls at the front at like 30 or so to everyone on the brakes 500m before the line! I was on Marino's wheel going into the finish then when people laid on the brakes Marino ended up on my wheel. Weird finish.
After my race I stayed around to watch the finish of the 123 and the masters.
The masters finished first and Ed won the field sprint. Ray finished in the field with Gary concluding his third race of the weekend.
Bert JP and Doan all had good finishes in the pro 123 after a guy from champion soloed for the win. Igor started a chase group on the last lap to try to reel in the man out from Champion Systems.

good shots thanks
this weekend is pretty full

Sunday is Central Park for the spring series.

Getting better

Second Race. This time Bert brought in Jim, and ?. Igor showed up in another jersey. In a flash, we go from close teammates to bitter enemies. Not really. Just means we're more free to attack each other. And on the last lap, we were headed for a showdown. I got away on 110berg. The guys blocked behind. Jonathan Erdelyi came up to me and we were motoring to catch Igor and Marty who were chasing Riffelmacher and Morras. Then Steve Ward pulled up with a huge wheelsucking sprinter on his wheel. Steve is always good in a break but the huge wheelsucking sprinter is always a pain. he never works and always sprints. Everyone has been burned by him. I decide to do everyone a favor and take the huge wheelsucking sprinter out of the break. Of course, it means enduring his curses and abuse, but I thought I could tail him off and then get back. I couldn't, at least not without him getting on my wheel again. Ugh. Sorry team. I should have waited until we were within a kilometer of the finish before taking the huge wheelsucking sprinter out of the break. My mistake. And then I compounded my error by not stringing out the pack to make for a fast and safe finish. sorry.

The Season has begun

Ah march. The first Sunday in March ALWAYS means the Spring Series. On Saturday, some of the guys raced at Branchbrook and learned the hard way why BB is not good in the spring. Can you say CRASH? Marc S. got taken out, which dented his top tube, wrecked his brand new front wheel, and gave him a serious knock in the head. Marc is now two for two; his last two races have yielded crashes. Ah, marc.

Sunday meant Bert, Doan and I were in for the I-II-III. We were surprised to see Igor on the line, but glad all the same. Igor was energetic as usual, and made the winning break happen on the first lap. None of us were good enough to get up there with him, though we tried and tried.
